This week’s edition of Andy’s Desk brings the Nike Zoom BB in a Larry Hughes Cavs colorway Player Exclusive from 2007. This shoe released right around the time that the first Footlocker House of Hoops opened up in New York City. This specific shoe, the Zoom BB 1, released in a set of five different Player Exclusives by Nike Basketball. Included within the Zoom BB P.E. set were a Ben Gordon Bulls P.E., Jason Kidd Nets P.E., Steve Nash Low top Suns P.E., NYC P.E., and this pair featured right here, the Larry Hughes Cavs P.E. The shoe featured a smooth leather upper with a patent leather forefoot in the toe area. As far as cushioning goes, this shoe was a beast on the court. It featured a full-length Nike Zoom Air bag which was right below your foot in the insole. The traction was also great and featured a herringbone outsole.
The best part about this story is that I didn’t have to pay a cent for the shoes. During 2007, Nike Basketball had a very fan active website and offered a live call in talk show with Nike endorsed NBA athletes. During the talk show, host Rich Lopez of http://www.Kixandthecity.com, would interview the athlete and callers on the show were allowed to ask the NBA player 1 to 2 questions. And to top it off, at the end of each show host Rich Lopez would announce a special winner of Nike Basketball P.E’s among the live callers on the show.
This was actually my first time calling into the show, so I was pretty nervous. I believe the NBA player that I talked to was actually Brandon Roy and not Larry Hughes. At the end of the show, the host announced who the winner was and called out my name. I was so nervous I didn’t know what to say! Nike actually had to go back and re-edit the conversation because of how nervous I was. I really was speechless and thought he was joking.
It wasn’t until mid December, I come home late night from an away high school basketball game I had played in, do I see a brown packaged box at my front doorstep. I instantly knew what it was. I rushed into my house, cut open the box, and there they were. This is the only pair of Player Exclusive shoes, or P.E.’s, that I own and I still wear these till this day. The shoe was very well received around the college and NBA ranks as well. Many NBA players wore the Zoom BB in team bank colorways and some college basketball teams even got their own P.E.’s. Nike continued the BB line with the Zoom BB 2 and most recently in 2012 with the Zoom BB 2.5
